Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
