Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody so that their unique problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
