Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
