Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their particular problems can be treated in treatment.
