Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
