Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be very helpful in circumstances where standard rehabilitation settings have not meet expectations, for example coping with situations in the women's life that are distinctive and distressing. Such troubles may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or another significant issues which can be particular to women. Studies show that women may also become involved in substance abuse more easily than men, and so are more vulnerable to sickness due to drug abuse problems than males as a result. Because of duties in the home, women also tend to postpone searching for and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. Being mindful of this, treatment services for women are designed so that a women's needs would be the concentration and priority. Similar to coed programs, drug rehabilitation programs that provide treatment services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a 1st step. After this step, counselors help women focus on both basic and gender-specific problems which may have prompted their substance abuse.
