Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
