Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in situations where traditional treatment settings have not meet expectations, for example coping with situations within a women's life which are unique and distressing. Such difficulties may relate to sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or other really serious issues that are specific to women. Studies show that women could also become involved in substance abuse more easily than men, and so are more predisposed to sickness because of drug abuse issues than males because of this. Because of obligations in the home, women also tend to put off looking for and receiving care for addiction, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, treatment services for women are created to ensure a women's needs are the focus and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug rehab facilities that provide rehab solutions to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women focus on both basic and gender-specific issues who have prompted their substance abuse. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, and several facilities which offer treatment services to women offer client beds for her young children.
