Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
