Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in treatment.
