Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
