Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person to ensure their own problems can be remedied in rehab.
