Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be handled in treatment.
