Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be handled in rehab.
