Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehab.
