Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has shown to be beneficial in circumstances where traditional rehab settings have fallen short, for example dealing with situations in a women's life which can be unique and traumatic. Such issues may relate to sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other serious issues that are particular to women. Research shows that women also can get embroiled in drug use more readily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness as a consequence of drug abuse issues than males consequently. Because of responsibilities in their home, women also tend to postpone searching for and undergoing treatment, a circumstance which can lead to disaster. That said, rehabilitation services for women are designed so that a women's needs are the concentration and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehab programs which provide rehabilitation solutions to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women focus on both general and gender-specific problems who have triggered their substance abuse. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, and several centers that offer rehab services to women offer client beds for their kids.
