Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs.
