Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
