Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
