Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
