Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
