Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual so that their particular challenges can be remedied in rehab.
