Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody so that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
