Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure their particular challenges can be remedied in treatment.
