Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
