Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
