Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
