Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
