Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual so that their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
