Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
