Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
