Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
