Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in circumstances where traditional treatment settings have not meet expectations, for example coping with situations in the women's life which can be unique and traumatic. Such concerns may relate to sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, or other really serious issues that are particular to women. Studies show that women can also become involved in drug abuse more readily than men, and are more predisposed to illness as a result of addiction problems than males as a result. Due to obligations in their home, women also tend to postpone trying to find and receiving treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. Being mindful of this, treatment services for women are designed so that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Comparable to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities that provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women concentrate on both standard and gender specific concerns who have induced their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the constructive support from other female peers, plus some facilities which provide treatment services to women provide client beds for their children.
