Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
