Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
