Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
