Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
