Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
