Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
