Regrettably, it is a fact that millions of people actually choose to drive an automobile while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not just puts one's life in danger and puts passengers in danger too, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually bring about serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and even jail time. Quite often somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse problem. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol treatment rather than other serious consequences for crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other effects from the crime, but can decrease the seriousness of such consequences to some large degree. Studies have shown that a large percentage of people who do receive alcohol and drug rehab for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for similar charges in the future.
