Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
