Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face.
