Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be treated in rehab.
