Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
