Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
