Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody so that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehab.
