Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
