Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in treatment.
