LGBT is short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and there are programs which address the unique needs of these clients. People who are LGBT can feel alone, not understood, and viewed as socially unwanted. This may be a very difficult or painful existence, and leads many LGBT people to a life of drug abuse to alleviate these feelings. Someone that is LGBT may not feel at ease within a traditional rehabilitation facility amongst people who aren't experiencing the same challenges they are experiencing within their lives. A LGBT program offers an environment that is free from judgment, where LGBT clients can be completely comfortable and safe divulging to their peers and rehabilitation counselors issues which need to be handled so that they can recover. Rehabilitation counselors in a LGBT rehab will help clients repair relationships with their family, in case their loved ones disagree with their sexual choice as is generally the case. This situation is definitely a common trigger for substance abuse, which is an example of something which could be handled in treatment. LGBT clients often simply want to be accepted in their lives, and treatment will help them accept themselves and create confidence to be able to lead a healthy life without any alcohol and drugs.
