Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in circumstances where conventional treatment settings have fallen short, such as dealing with situations within a women's life which are distinctive and painful. Such concerns may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other really serious issues which can be particular to women. Research has revealed that women also can get embroiled in substance abuse more easily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness as a result of drug abuse problems than males as a result. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to put off trying to find and receiving treatment, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. Being mindful of this, treatment services for women are designed so that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Similar to coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehab centers which offer rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both common and gender-specific problems which may have triggered their substance abuse. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from their female peers, and a few centers which provide rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for her young children.
